The joy and impact of pets on our lives

Since 1965, we’ve dedicated ourselves to enhancing the lives of pets and their owners. Beginning with our inaugural Pink Pup line of shampoos, we’ve grown to offer a diverse selection of products to fit specific needs. Our Balance line incorporates the best ingredients found in nature. Our Kenic offerings have stood the test of time, and our award-winning Barktini Blends shampoos and colognes make bath time the happiest hour.

Pets  have a significant place in our lives, and in our hearts. They’re family members, companions, and confidantes, filling our homes with joy and love. According to a January 2024 Forbes report, 51% of Americans who own pets consider them part of the family.

More Americans have embraced that idea in recent years.

In Pet Ownership Statistics 2024, Forbes reporter Michelle Megna reported:

  • Pet ownership has increased by 10% since 1988, with 66% of American households (89.6 million) stating that they own at least 1 pet.
  • Millennials make up the largest percentage of current pet owners (33%), followed by Gen X (25%) and baby boomers (24%).
  • In 2022, Americans spent $136.8 billion on their pets, up 11% from 2021 ($123.6 billion)

Owning a pet can also be good for your health. Pet owners often experience lower blood pressure, reduced cholesterol levels, and a decreased risk of heart disease. This is due to the increased physical activity that comes with walking a dog, playing with a cat, or even cleaning a pet's habitat.

Denise M. Millstine, M.D., who specializes in integrative medicine and health at Mayo Clinic, cited tangible benefits of pet ownership:

  • Keep us company, which makes us feel less alone.
  • Make us laugh and smile, which can lift mood and manage stress.
  • Comfort us during challenging times.
  • Encourage us to exercise and get outdoors.
  • Give us routine and purpose.

Pets can also reduce stress, anxiety, and depression. Petting an animal can release endorphins, the body's natural stress relievers. Pets also provide a sense of purpose and routine, which can be beneficial for those struggling with mental health issues. The responsibility of caring for a pet can instill a sense of achievement and self-worth, helping to combat feelings of despair and hopelessness.

For families with children, pets offer an excellent opportunity to teach responsibility and empathy. Caring for a pet requires commitment and effort, and children learn valuable life lessons about responsibility, routine, and compassion through pet ownership. Understanding the needs and feelings of a pet fosters a sense of empathy that extends to other areas of their lives.

Pets can also be a wonderful way to connect with other people. Dog owners, for instance, often find themselves engaging in conversations with fellow dog walkers at the park or in their neighborhood. These interactions can lead to lasting friendships and a stronger sense of community. Pets serve as social catalysts, breaking down barriers and bringing people together.

We understand that pets are much more than animals; they are beloved members of our families who enrich our lives. They provide companionship, love, and emotional support. Our pets contribute to our physical and mental well-being, and they bring us closer to our communities and families. As we continue to create products that enhance the lives of pets and their owners, we celebrate the profound impact pets have on our lives and the joy they bring to our hearts.
